Search for stockpile monitoring cost and you will find pages of "request a quote" and almost no numbers. That silence is not because pricing is impossible to state; it is because nobody wants to go first. So here are real figures for every method, including our own, and the break-even logic that connects them.

Drone survey: €1,200–2,500 per deployment. Our drone survey service across the DACH region runs at €1,200–2,500 per deployment including processing, plus travel. You get volume reports per pile, an orthophoto and a terrain model, at ±2 % volume accuracy (our RTK workflow; 1–3 % is method-typical). For context, typical US market rates for comparable stockpile flights span roughly $500–3,000 per survey depending on site size and provider, so our range sits where the international market sits. Per-deployment pricing is the right model when you measure quarterly or monthly; it becomes the wrong model the moment you need data weekly.

Terrestrial laser scanning as a service: a four-figure sum per survey day. Where audit-grade accuracy is the point, a terrestrial scan crew typically costs on the order of €999–3,500 per survey day, depending on site size and reporting depth. Accuracy lands below 1 %, which is why this remains the standard for year-end stocktaking. Same economics as the drone: excellent per event, expensive as a habit.

Fixed LiDAR system: capex per site, not per measurement. A permanently installed system inverts the pricing model. Cost scales with the number of sensors, which follows from yard geometry and required coverage, plus an annual maintenance fee; how often you measure no longer costs anything. The entry point is lower than most people expect: a single silo or storage bay can be equipped for about €5,000–10,000 — depending on geometry, that budget sometimes even covers two bays. Larger yards scale from there with sensor count. For a second reference point, our truck terminal base system starts at approximately €25,000. We offer both capex and opex models — purchase or subscription, whichever is more pragmatic for your accounting — plus a rental option to trial the system before committing. And because the platform runs across practically every bulk material in production, the density and dust behaviour of your material is almost never new to us. Once installed, the system measures continuously, so the cost per measurement falls towards zero the longer it runs. What a full stockpile monitoring system costs for your specific yard is a layout question, which is why serious vendors ask for your yard plan before quoting.

The break-even, with numbers. Take a yard that needs two measurements per month and plan three years ahead: 72 drone deployments at a mid-range €1,500 make €108,000, before travel. Even a full multi-sensor yard system costing many times the €5,000–10,000 single-bay entry point lands comfortably below that, and it delivers continuous data instead of 72 snapshots. The rule of thumb that falls out: below roughly one measurement per month, mobile services win; above it, the fixed system usually wins on stockpile measurement cost per data point, and the 24/7 feed comes free. The frequency side of this decision has its own guide.

The hidden costs nobody quotes. The invoice is not the whole stockpile monitoring cost:

  • Downtime. Manual walk-overs and some survey methods need a resting pile; stopped loading is a cost that never appears on the survey invoice.
  • Staff time. Escorting crews, closing areas, processing results, arguing about which number is right.
  • Error cost. Step-and-eye estimates scatter 5–15 %, and belt-scale-based bookkeeping drifts 2–3 % between calibrations. On 100,000 t of inventory, a 5 % error is worth more than any measurement method on this page. The cheapest-looking method is routinely the most expensive one.

The honest caveat: cheaper sensors exist. Radar or ultrasonic point sensors cost a fraction of everything above, and for a silo with one fill point they are the right answer. But a point sensor reads one distance, not a volume: on an open yard with irregular piles it tells you the height under the sensor and nothing else. If the question is "how many tonnes are in my yard", a level reading is not a cheap answer, it is a different answer.

This is what we build: OWL EYE® STOCKPILE — continuous stockpile measurement with stationary 3D LiDAR: ±1 % volume, per-zone density calibration, every movement captured as it happens. One capex figure, then the cost per measurement falls towards zero.

→ See the solution: stockpile measurement & monitoring

The bottom line. Stockpile measurement cost is not a mystery: €1,200–2,500 per drone deployment, a four-figure day rate for terrestrial scanning, and fixed systems that start around €5,000–10,000 for a single silo or storage bay and scale with yard geometry — as purchase, subscription or rental trial. Count your measurements per year, multiply, and compare against a site quote. If you send us your yard layout, you get the fixed-system half of that comparison as a concrete number instead of an estimate. Want to run your own numbers?

O break-even, com números.

  • Custo do erro.
