Belt Scale Drift: Why Your Tonnes Don't Add UpBandwaagen-Drift: Warum Ihre Tonnen nicht stimmenDeriva della bilancia a nastro: perché le tonnellate non tornano

A belt scale does not fail loudly. It fails at half a percent a month — quietly, in one direction, while every report built on its totals looks perfectly plausible. By the time the annual stocktake arrives, the accumulated drift surfaces as thousands of tonnes of "difference" that nobody can explain. Here is why that happens, and how operations catch it early.

Why belt scales drift. A weightometer infers mass from the force on weighed idlers plus belt speed. Every part of that chain moves over time:

  • Belt tension and stiffness change with temperature, humidity, splice repairs and belt age — and tension is the single biggest error source in belt weighing.
  • Material buildup on idlers and the weigh frame adds phantom tare that gets weighed with every metre of belt.
  • Idler alignment shifts with wear and structure movement; a misaligned idler before or after the weigh frame changes the force geometry.
  • Loading point changes — a new chute, a different drop height, off-centre loading — alter how material sits on the belt across the weighing zone.

Manufacturers quote 0.25–0.5 % accuracy for a freshly calibrated scale under reference conditions. Field studies and operator experience put real-world accuracy between calibrations at 2–3 % drift — and drift is systematic, not random: it does not average out, it accumulates.

Why nobody notices. A drifting scale produces internally consistent numbers: today's total looks like yesterday's, trends look smooth, dashboards stay green. The error only becomes visible against an independent reference — and in most plants the only independent reference is the annual survey. Twelve months of drift, one reconciliation shock. If your monthly numbers never disagree with your belt scale, that is not proof it is right — it is proof nothing is checking it.

How to catch drift in days instead of months.

  • Compare against measured stock change. If the scale says 40,000 t left the yard this week and the measured pile volumes dropped by the equivalent of 38,800 t, you have a 3 % conversation to have now — not at year-end. Continuous stockpile measurement makes this a standing automatic check; the workflow is described under material balance reconciliation.
  • Watch the zero. Regular empty-belt zero checks catch buildup and tare drift cheaply — they just have to actually happen.
  • Track calibration deltas. If every calibration moves the span in the same direction, you are not calibrating noise — you are measuring a systematic drift and should find its source.

The wear-free alternative: OWL EYE® VOLUME FLOW — conveyor volume flow measurement with LiDAR: ±1 %, no moving parts, no tension sensitivity, no recalibration after belt changes. Plus belt load profile, misalignment and spillage detection a scale can never deliver.

Repair, reference or replace? The honest decision tree:

  • Keep the scale if you need legally certified mass for custody transfer — volume-based systems complement but do not replace certified trade weighing.
  • Add an independent reference if your scale feeds reconciliation, production KPIs or internal billing: a LiDAR volume-flow measurement running in parallel catches drift continuously and settles the "which number is right" argument with data.
  • Replace the scale where certification is not required and maintenance eats the budget: contactless measurement has no wear parts and no drift mechanism — the full comparison is in LiDAR vs belt scale.

Belt scale drift is not a scandal — it is physics plus time. The scandal is only ever the missing reference measurement. Where your yard numbers come from and how the methods stack up: why stockpile reconciliation never balances and 6 stockpile measurement methods, honestly compared.

Drift in Tagen statt Monaten erkennen.
