OWL EYE  ·  Silo monitoring & continuous fill-level capture

3D level measurement in the bunker. Without touching the bunker.

OWL EYE® Bunkers & Feeders is an industrial LiDAR system for 3D level measurement: it monitors bunker, hopper and silo fill levels to ±1 % accuracy in real time — with threshold-cascade overfill protection and OPC-UA integration. Level is only half the story: the same scan delivers silo and bunker volume measurement — a complete surface model with volume and profile per vessel, not just a single level reading.

OWL EYE® BUNKERS & FEEDERS mounts a 3D-LiDAR sensor on top of your silo, hopper, crusher or process vessel. The sensor captures the surface of the bulk material continuously — through dust, vapour and varying material colour. Unlike radar or ultrasonic probes that measure the level at a single point, 3D level measurement captures the complete surface of the bulk solids — true volume instead of a point level, even with material cones, ratholes above the discharge and uneven filling.

One platform, every level-measurement scenario — silo level, bin level or hopper level: silo scan, bunker scan, hopper scan and bucket scan — same sensor, same dashboard, same API.

Fill level, volume and material distribution are streamed to your PLC, ERP or web dashboard. No moving parts, no contact with the bulk, no drift over time.

„Mechanical fill-level probes wear out. LiDAR doesn't touch the material — and never wears out."

3D level measurement · Core capabilities

Three properties that replace the probe.

Touchless 3D capture

Sensor sits above the bulk, no contact, no wear, no drift.

Live fill level + volume

Continuous height, volume and material distribution. Updated every second.

Dust-resilient

Optical filtering and multi-echo processing — measurement holds in dusty environments.

How it works

One sensor. Continuous capture.

A 3D-LiDAR sensor mounted above the bunker scans the bulk surface continuously. The point cloud is processed into fill level, volume and material distribution in real time.

Applications

Any bunker, any feeder — monitored continuously.

From feed bunkers and crusher hoppers to silos and process vessels — including special bulk solids like bone meal and MBM: monitoring of bone-meal silos stays stable even with fine meals that raise heavy dust — thanks to multi-echo processing and optical filtering.

OWL EYE  ·  Overfill protection · Alerts that act

Silo overfill protection. Threshold alerts that act.

Silo overfill protection begins long before the material reaches the dome. OWL EYE® BUNKERS computes fill level and remaining volume continuously, so configurable low / high / critical thresholds can trigger long before a paddle switch would ever react.

Alerts route exactly where they need to go: PLC contacts via OPC UA for interlocked stop logic, REST or MQTT into your SCADA, and e-mail or SMS notifications for the on-call shift. Each threshold is per-silo and per-material, with hysteresis to avoid alarm flooding during normal cycling.

Because LiDAR sees the entire surface, not just a single point, the system also detects asymmetric build-ups, sidewall caking and hopper-discharge blockages — failure modes a single-point probe misses entirely. Overfill prevention turns from a switch event into a continuous condition signal. Radar or 3D LiDAR for your silo? Our silo level measurement comparison weighs both honestly. Discharging from the bunker straight into trucks? OWL EYE® Filling Terminal measures the fill in the truck bed live, so loading stops at the target volume.

„Overfill protection should never depend on a switch that may have failed last week. Continuous LiDAR is the upgrade."

OWL EYE® Bunkers & Feeders

What is 3D level measurement — and how does it differ from radar? +
3D level measurement means that instead of measuring the fill level at a single point (as radar, ultrasonic or plumb-bob sensors do), a LiDAR sensor captures the entire bulk material surface as a 3D model. From that the system computes the true volume — even with material cones, ratholes above the discharge and uneven filling, where a point measurement is systematically wrong: the probe sees the tip of the cone or the hole above the outlet, never both. The other key difference: a radar probe delivers one height; 3D level measurement delivers volume, fill-level distribution and free capacity per zone — contactless, wear-free and dust-resistant through multi-echo processing. Details: OWL EYE® BUNKERS & FEEDERS — 3D level measurement for silos & bunkers; for waste bunkers in incineration plants: waste bunker monitoring.
Which container types work with OWL EYE® Bunkers & Feeders? +
Silos, hoppers, crushers, charging hoppers, mixer feeders, process vessels, containers and pusher-floor systems. The 3D-LiDAR sensor mounts on the lid or upper structure and looks down onto the bulk surface — anything with an accessible top opening can be measured. LiDAR range is 0.5–40 m, so the system covers everything from shallow feed bunkers up to tall storage silos. Optional compressed-air auto-cleaning keeps the optics clear in dust- or vapour-heavy environments like cement, charcoal or sugar receiving.
Which bunker and silo geometries are supported? +
Cylindrical silos, rectangular bunkers, conical hoppers, slot bunkers, flat-bottom containers — any vessel where a top-mounted scanner has a clear view of the material surface. Single-point fill-level (TOF / radar replacement) starts at 0.5 m diameter; full volumetric mode for irregular bunkers (e.g. feeder bunkers with a sloped bottom) needs ≥ 1.5 m clearance for the scan cone. Maximum measured depth is typically 30 m, beyond that the signal-to-noise drops below the ±2% spec.
How does the sensor cope with dust, condensation and corrosion? +
The OWL EYE® BUNKER housing is IP65-rated stainless steel or coated aluminium with an optical window that can be cleaned by an optional compressed-air pulse on a schedule (every 30 min in dusty environments). For aggressive atmospheres (chloride, acid vapours, sugar dust, salt) we ship a corrosion-resistant version. Internal heater + dew-point control prevents condensation in cold storage buildings. Maintenance interval: 6-month sight check, yearly window cleaning.
Why measure bunker and silo fill level without a mechanical probe? +
Mechanical fill-level devices — level cables, plumb-bobs, rotating paddles, capacitance rods — all share one problem: a part sits in the material. That part abrades, gets buried under an inflow, jams when material is sticky, and needs regular maintenance. And it still only reads one point. Non-contact 3D-LiDAR fill-level measurement works the other way round. The sensor sits above the material and never touches it — nothing to wear, nothing to bury, nothing for sticky or moist bulk to cake onto. Instead of one point it scans the whole surface, so it captures the real volume across cones, funnels and irregular shapes, and flags wall buildup or bridging. For silos, feed bunkers, crushers and process vessels that means: contactless, maintenance-free, dust-resistant, and a true 3D fill level rather than a single-point guess. OWL EYE® BUNKERS & FEEDERS is built around exactly this principle.
Can OWL EYE® scan buckets, hoppers and chutes for fill levels? +
Yes. OWL EYE® BUNKERS works on any open or partially open vessel where a 3D-LiDAR can see the bulk surface — and that includes buckets, hoppers, charging chutes and intermediate bins, not only large silos. Typical bucket-scan installations:
  • Charging hoppers and feed buckets — fill volume captured continuously, so the upstream feeder can be paced to actual demand.
  • Crusher and mill feed hoppers — choke-feed monitoring; OWL EYE® flags partial fill or bridging before throughput drops.
  • Mobile and movable buckets — mounted sensor scans the bucket position-by-position; volume is computed against the known bucket geometry.
  • Chutes and intermediate bins — anti-blockage monitoring; profile irregularities show bridging or arching long before the chute clogs.
Mounting height typically 0.5 to 5 m above the opening. The sensor is calibrated against the empty-vessel geometry on commissioning, so fill volume is the live difference between current and empty surface. Sensor type, range and protection class are selected from the OWL EYE® multi-vendor portfolio to match the duty (mining-grade rugged, food-grade hygienic, etc.).
