Waste bunker monitoring is a 3D-LiDAR system over your waste-to-energy or EBS bunker that tracks bunker volume, crane grab position and per-shift cut-and-fill — so the firing crew mixes from a real map, not from memory. Built on OWL EYE® STOCKPILE.
Waste bunker management runs on one number that the crane operator, the boiler and the logistics office all need: current volume per zone. Yet in most waste-to-energy and EBS plants the firing crew or the crane operator still estimates fill level by eye from the control-room window. Which sector is oldest? Where is the crane right now — how much did it take from where, and where did it put it? Is the waste properly mixed? The answer lives in the operator's head — and walks out with every shift change.
OWL EYE® waste bunker monitoring replaces that estimate with a continuous 3D model of the entire bunker — sector-by-sector bunker volume measurement for waste incineration plants. The system delivers real-time crane tracking — live position and every move of the waste-crane grab — and knows volume per sector and age per zone (FIFO indicator). Cut-and-fill diffs show what was removed by the firing line and what was added by deliveries — per sector, per shift, per furnace line.
Built on the same engine as our OWL EYE® STOCKPILE volumetric platform, with a feed-bunker variant for shredded RDF and SRF on the recycling line.

Step 1 — scan. 3D-LiDAR sensors mounted above the bunker sweep the entire waste surface and return a dense point cloud — through the dust and steam that hang over every tipping hall. The crane and grab cross the field of view constantly; the system tracks them and masks them out automatically, so crane traffic never corrupts the surface model. One honest caveat: under permanent extreme dust directly above the discharge point, any optical method reaches its limits — sensor placement decides, which is why it is engineered individually for each bunker.
Step 2 — compute. The software registers every point cloud against the stored bunker geometry and converts it into volume per zone: cut-and-fill differentials show what was removed and where deliveries landed, zone age flags the oldest material (FIFO), and the movement history shows how well the waste has been mixed through.
Step 3 — deliver. The values feed the crane control system and the control room: grab recommendations for the next pick, a filling strategy for incoming deliveries, and throughput per zone and shift for the operations log.
A continuous 3D surface of the entire bunker, segmented by sector. Per-sector volume, free capacity and zone age (FIFO indicator) replace the operator-eye estimate — the firing crew mixes from a real map, not from memory.
Live grab position from the crane PLC API or derived directly from the LiDAR scan. What the grab picks up, where it drops, and which sector lost or gained volume — every cycle. The movement picture shows whether the bunker was actually mixed through — fed into the mixing strategy and the shift log.
3D differential between consecutive scans: what the firing line removed, what deliveries added — per sector, per line, per shift. Auditable record of how the bunker actually moved, not how the spreadsheet remembered it.
Wherever a tipping bunker feeds a furnace and the firing crew needs to know what is in the bunker before the grab moves — OWL EYE® waste bunker monitoring belongs. The same sensors measure wood chips in biomass fuel bunkers, coal in coal bunkers and sewage sludge in reception bunkers — sludge and wood-chip volume is converted to tonnes via material-calibrated bulk density.
3D-LiDAR sensors are mounted at the bunker ceiling and scan the full tipping pit continuously. The point cloud is reduced to a sector-by-sector volume map; grab position is read from the crane PLC or derived directly from the LiDAR stream. Cut-and-fill is a live 3D diff against the prior scan per sector — what the firing line removed, what deliveries added.
The questions plant managers, firing crew and crane operators ask before specifying LiDAR for an incineration bunker.
